Badminton
I am basically a badminton player
and my whole family apart from
my mum played this game and won
few championships in Sri Lanka.
My father who has won Sri Lankan
doubles championships in the national
level tournaments, started coaching
my three sisters and me at a very
young age (between 4-6). As a
family we have won many badminton
tournaments and all 4 of us have
won the junior national Sri Lankan
championship in our own age groups
many years ago.
There is an interesting story
about my father’s coaching,
when he coaches us in the evenings
he uses to take all of us including
our house maid Nageswari whome
we call Mani to the badminton
court and started to coach her
as well. Mani started learning
and playing really well. She is
a very hard worker and a very
strong girl. When we go for tournaments
Mani too joins us and use to win
matches in her respective age
group. It was unbelievable and
incredible when she made headlines
in the Sri Lankan newspaper that
a housemaid beat number two badminton
champion in the country. End of
that year she left our place and
if she had stayed one more year
my dad would have made her number
one and it would have been a great
record for a house maid to become
a countries number one in a sport.
I played couple of tournaments
few years ago and once was runner-up
in B division doubles badminton
tournament in Sydney and also
runner-up in a doubles tournament
contacted by a Sri Lankan club
in 2006. |

Cricket
Even though Badminton was my number
one sport. I have a lot of passion
for cricket, especially when Sri
Lankan cricket team plays, I freeze
in front of the TV. I love to
watch players like Sanath Jayasurya,
Peterson, Shewag, Gillchrist or
Afridi blasting the ball all over
the ground. I cannot concentrate
on anything when I watch these
guys batting that’s how
much I love the game of cricket.
Although I support Sri Lankan
cricket team I have to admit that
Australia is the number one team
currently.
I too like to play cricket when
ever I get a chance and I play
in a winter competition in Sydney
with a team organized by my wife's
cousins. |
